Mary McLeod Bethune (1875–1955) in January 1943 at Bethune-Cookman College, a school she initially founded as the Literary and Industrial Training School for Negro Girls in Daytona Beach, Florida in 1904. Bethune also served as a national adviser to president Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of what was known as his Black Cabinet.
