Mohandas Gandhi (1869 – 1948) was driven to Gowalia Tank Maidan, Mumbai where he called upon his countrymen to launch the Quit India Movement. The police later used tear gas to disperse the large crowd which had gathered at Gowalia. Gandhi was the preeminent leader of the Indian independence movement in British-ruled India.
