February 8, 2018 - Munich, Bavaria, Germany - Horst Seehofer, head of Angela Merkel’s Bavarian sister party the CSU held a conference one day after a 177-page agreement between Angela Merkel and the SPD was made in order to create a viable government and avoid new elections. Germany has been operating without a functional government since the September 24th elections, which not only propelled the right-extremist AfD party to third-place nationally, but also led to the unprecedented downfall of Seehofer as Minister-President of Bavaria. The CSU has been a holdout on themes such as limits on refugee intake and on immigration, increased Kindergeld, and the ending of the Solidarity Tax for the former East Germany. Alexander Dobrindt and Andreas Scheuer .Seehofer, a divisive figure of German politics, is expected to receive a position in the Innenministerium (Interior Ministry) as “Heimatminister”, which has produced large debates and criticisms on the internet from citizens and politicians alike. .The new coalition promises “a new dynamic for Germany” (“eine neue Dynamik”) and also sees former challenger to Merkel Martin Schulz as Foreign Minister.
