Ouds in construction in Qatari maker's workshop. Showing intricate and ornate woodwork designs of the mandolin-shaped backs. Common across the Middle East, the precursor of the western lute. The name oud (or ud) derives from the Arabic for 'wood', and this refers to the strips of wood used to make its rounded body.
