The Maheno, a once large and impressive luxury cruise liner that was built in 1905, was driven onto the sands of Fraser Island's 75-mile beach during a cyclonic storm in 1935. It played a role as a hospital ship during World War I, and, moored near Anzac Cove, provided a refuge and a treatment facility for soldiers who had been wounded at the battle of Gallipoli. After the war, the Maheno reverted to her earlier role as a luxury passenger liner, but was being towed to Japan to be scrapped when she met her ultimate fate. The wreck is a popular tourist attraction on the beach that is officially a highway along the longest trafficable beach in the world. Fraser Island is a world heritage listed site and one of Queensland and Australia's most popular tourist destinations.
