This species of cactus grows as a single succulent stem; auxins ^secreted from the apical bud at the top of the stem prevent lateral (axillary) buds from developing. The photo at left shows an uncut stem. The photo at right shows the same cactus a year after the stem was cut, removing the apical bud. Without auxin from the apical bud, the stem has resprouted from a lateral bud.
