More information:

St Gallgo’s Church, near Moelfre on Anglesey. Christian site dating back to around AD600. The white painted railings surround the grave of the Rev. Stephen Roose Hughes 1815 - 1862 Vicar of the Parish during the wreck of the Royal Charter off the coast of Anglesey in 1859. He and his brother the Rev’d Hugh Robert Hughes worked tirelessly to organise the burial of the victims in this and other local churchyards. Where the identity of the victims was unknown their graves were marked with rough stone boulders as can be seen in the foreground of this picture. The inscription on the grave slab reads "His noble and disinterested exertions on the memorable occasion of the terrible wreck of the Royal Charter are well known throughout the world. The subsequent effects of those exertions proved too much for his constitution, and suddenly brought him to an early Grave. (Age 47 Rector of Llaneugrad & Llanallgo for 10 years) To his Memory by his Widow Jane Anne Roose Hughes.
