Castle Dore, near Fowey, is an Iron Age hillfort consisting of a circular bank and ditch 225 ft in diameter dating from the 3rd to 1st centuries BC. During the 6th century AD a large hall was built within the earthworks which is associated with King Mark, the legendary Dark Age king featured in the story of Tristan and Isolde. On 31 August 1644 the fort was the site of a stand by Parliamentary forces during the Civil War Battle of Lostwithiel.
