USS Hartford colliding with CSS Tennessee at the Battle of Mobile Bay on 5 August, 1864, after a wartime sketch. American Civil War. The Confederate ship, the Tennessee, was vastly outnumbered, but was able to engage the entire Union fleet due to the strength of her armour. Eventually, strength in numbers won through, and her captain, James D. Johnson, surrendered.
