Per a 2016 article by the Chicago Tribune, the dyeing of the Chicago River began in 1962 and is always performed by members of two families, the Butler and Rowan clans. To participate in the boat crew that disburses a secret recipe of vegetable dye, you must be related by blood or marriage to Mike Butler or Tom Rowan. Dyeing the river green kicks off at 9:00 am and is always on the Saturday of or before St. Patrick's Day.
