Flight of the electric Demoichelle The second Green Paris Air Show at le Bourget got an historic flashback as the Demoichellec made two flights during the air show. This aircraft is a modernised replica of the Santos-Dumont’s “Demoiselle”, designed in 1907. The Demoichelle was built by Daniel Dalby and the French association APEV (Association pour la Promotion des Echelles Volantes - Association for the Promotion of the Flying Ladders). It flew for the first time in 2009 using a classic engine, but was given an electric engine in 2010. The engine boasts 15Kw (18hp) of power along with 36kg of Lithium-Polymer batteries, allowing the Demoichellec to fly for 20 minutes. The electric engine is amazingly silent and the Demoichellec is as noisy as a non-powered glider! The aircraft also have some nice flight capabilities: it flew with 10 to 15kts of crosswind at Le Bourget. The pilot was Charles Donnefort, vice-president of the APEV and engineer student. While the Demoichelle was airborne, the rest of the APEV team was busy building two wings. The wings were completed in only three days to show the visitors how simple the Demoichelle’s design is. During the first Green Paris Air Show in 2008, the APEV build a complete aircraft in only three days!
