German prisoners disembarking from a landing craft at the beginning of February 1944 en route to a prison camp. It followed the Second World War break through of the Gustav Line, built to defend western Italy, stretching from north of the Garigliano River in the west, through the Apennine Mountains to the mouth of the Sangro River on the Adriatic coast in the east.
