Gullfoss, Iceland, 20th century. A tiered. catarcat waterfall in a canyon of the Hvita river in southwest Iceland, Gullfoss is a popular tourist attractions. The waterfall was rented indirectly by its owners, to foreign investors during the first half of the 20th century with a view to generating electricity. The investors' attempts were unsuccessful, and the waterfall was sold to the state of Iceland, and is now protected.
