RM2C59B54–Post-War West Germany 1948 Money Exchange. Crowds at the money exchange office (Wechsel Stube) On June 20, 1948 a reorganization of the money system in the Western Germany Occupation Zones. A currency reform came into effect and from June 21, 1948, the 'Deutsche Mark' replaced the 'Reichsmark' and 'Rentenmark' means of payment became invalid. After the Second World War, goods remained very scarce. Food and other goods were only available in small quantities and only through food stamps and purchase certificates.
