East against West Germany... Crowds at the exchange office - here at Wittenbergplatz On June 20, 1948 there was a reorganization of the money system in the Western Occupation Zones. A currency reform came into effect; and from June 21, 1948, the "Deutsche Mark" replaced the "Reichsmark" and "Rentenmark" means of payment became invalid .; After the Second World War, goods remained very scarce; Food and other goods were only available in small quantities and only through food stamps and purchase certificates. However, there was plenty of money; which led to backlogged inflation, making the Reichsmark almost worthless. The citizens went to the black market; to get goods; that were offered there at extremely high prices; or just exchanged goods with other goods; which made the money even more meaningless.
