The competition was founded by Col. Sir Howard Vincent, A.D.C. to King Edward VII - when he offered a silver Challenge shield to be competed for by the ancient regiments ''As often as may be convenient''. Vincent Vella - uses his carbide lamp for blacking the sights of his rifle - prior to shooting at Bisley today. the carbide lamps are part of the unit equipment - for this purpose.
