Caffè Meletti is one of the 150 historical cafès in Italy, and maintains its original Art Nouveau style Besides the beauty of the building, this café, situated at Piazza del Popolo the "sitting room" of the city - has always represented a social and cultural meeting place The façade of the building harmonizes with the city and like the other buildings that frame the square, Meletti presents an arcaded portico with first floor arched windows in the same shape as the Renaissance buildings opposite . its true nature as an Art Nouveau café can be discovered in the interior, with round painted tables made from white Carrara marble , Viennese chairs, velvet banquettes, painted ceilings, large etched mirrors, elegant columns; which are all elements which reflect the taste of the period. The café was opened May 18, 1907 on the site of the nineteenth-century Post Office, a small building which itself replaces the antique "Picchetto della Dogana", or Customs. The frescoes underneath the portico, rediscovered following the restoration of 1998, are by Giovanni Picca (1840-1910), one of the most important scenographers and theatrical decorators of Italy; and they allude to the functions of the postal service linked to the idea of progress. In 1903 the building was purchased by Silvio Meletti; owner of a liqueur factory whose products became famous in all of Italy and abroad. From this moment, the life of the café had begun: the industrialist transformed the building into a sumptuous meeting place for the citizens of Ascoli
