Depiction of the destruction of the Roman city of Pompeii during the eruption of Vesuvius on 24 August 24, 79 CE; panicked inhabitants try to flee the city. The painter may have been inspired by E.G. Bulwer-Lytton's historic novel, "The Last Days of Pompeii", published in 1834.
