Israel is considered a global leader in medical cannabis research and innovation and is one of only three countries in the world where cannabis research is sponsored by the government. Some 35, 000 patients are treated with Cannabis locally. The 2016 government approved 'Medical Cannabis Reform' will take effect April 1st, 2019. Cannabis patients will be able to purchase their Cannabis supply in 100 accredited pharmacies nationwide, farms failing to comply with government standards will be closed and 100 new physicians will be licensed to issue prescriptions in addition to 80 already doing so. In 2018 legislation passed allowing export of Cannabis products pending final government authorization expected perhaps, in just days.
