London, UK. 23rd Feb 2021. It is the second day of “tree-sitting” at London’s York Gardens, Battersea. In a bid to save a 100-year-old black poplar tree from felling, three activists have climbed and occupied it during the night between 21st and 22nd of February. The tree was due for cutting down to make way for a new electric cable, part of the local housing regeneration scheme by the council and Taylor Wimpey Homes. Tree protectors and their supporters believe the cable could have been diverted. Alan McInnes, from Taylor Wimpey Homes, declares that the planners and the Council tried “any possible alternative design” before of deciding to fell the tree. The poplar tree, a Category A, high amenity value tree, can only be felled if there are compelling reasons to cut it down. Wandsworth Council bailiffs served the activists with an eviction notice on Feb 22.
