Shiva is one of the principle deities of Hinduism. Otherwise known as Mahadeva, The Great God. The Auspicious One, the Supreme Lord. He is the Supreme Being in Shaivism, one of the major traditions withing Hinduism and one of the five equivalent deities iin Panchayatana of the Smarta tradition. This staiue depicts him meditating, in control of himself and all other forces, benevolent, compassionate and wise. The Ganges River flows from his hair. Seated in the lotus position, there are parallels with traditional depictions of Buddha and links to older mythologies.
