Mar. 22, 2012 - A young woman, 27 years old coming from Shanghai, is just coming out of a herpin daze. Her legs are a mass of needle jabs where she has injected heroin and distilled water. She comprehends little, staring fixedly at the policewoman, showing hr a hypdermic needle found on the top of a brick wall outside her hut. This is a favourite hiding place. She fans herself slowly. She has well night disintegrated as a woman. She eats little, using money for heroin. Incapable of work, she earns money from visits for coolies (1/3d a time) or a small packet of heroin

A blot on a colony: Women police raid drug addicts hovels in campaign to clean up Vice-ridden areas: Hong Kong today is a narcotics ridden city, a these pictures so graphically illustrate. Women police, led by Sub-Inspector l.M. Henson (Moseley, P~h~ and Sub-Inspector Margaret Patrick (Cambridge) carried ~~ one of a series of raids on the tin huts in a slime covered alley in the Wanchi District. Rats and ~ermin infest the place. Air is foul. Women live there, alon, in tiny rooms without a stick of furniture other than a bed on sleeping hat, a box for bedside table and an oil lamp. They lay ~~~urated in heroin, semi-comatose, slowly killing themselves, but unable to to~. The law says that they can only be arrested if drug are found on the person. But the addicts are cunning and evidence hard to find. Some are persuaded to get treatment, but often are soon back on the dope. The police try to catch the purveyors of ''pushers''. But, like hydra-headed serpents, as one is lopped, two replace it. Laboratory tests reveal sources of supply, Thailand is a culprit, with the Middle East a good second. But the women police carry on their constant battle against the evil. Cameramen Horace Abrahams received permission seldom granted to accompany a patrol on a 'raid'. This is what he saw, and his lens recorded. (Credit Image: Keystone Pictures USA/ZUMAPRESS)
