May 18, 2006; Miami, FL, USA; This vintage postcard says on the back "Harvesting fruit especially for you at Floyd Wray's Flamingo Groves, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. This card probably dates from the 1960's. According to the web, Michigan resident Floyd Wray came to Florida in 1925 in hopes of establishing a branch of the House of Crane Tobacco Company. But then the 1926 hurricane struck and Wray "recognized the shortage of Florida oranges during the summer months and teamed up with partners Frank Stirling and C.F. Hammerstein to organize Flamingo Groves. "By 1939, the original 40-acre planting climbed to over 200 and eventually covered over 2, 000 acres."
