Model of Olympus Communications Satellite orbiting planet Earth (showing horizon) in space with Wolf Moon above. Olympus was built by ESA - several European contractors principally British Aerospace. It was the largest civilian telecommunications satellite at the time - sometimes known as LargeSat or L-Sat. Launched in 1989 on an Ariane Space 3 rocket - from Kourou Space Centre - French Guiana. World's largest communications and business satellite at the time. Had a series of unfortunate accidents including being damaged in a Perseid shooting star meteor shower. It was de-orbited in 1993. Later Olympus was reincarnated as Alphabus by same manufacturers - Astrium and Thales Alenia (for client Immarsat).
