While the typical idea of tropical rainforest is of huge trees and a dense canopy, this is not always the case. At high altitude this kind of forest gives way to mossy rainforest, where the trees are stunted and both vegetation and ground are covered with dense layers of moss and ferns. Rainfall is extremely high, and the trees are almost constantly draped in fog, if not heavy rain. The scene in this image, of mossy rainforest on Mt Halcon, on the Philippine island of Mindoro, is typical.
