A Romanticist castle high in the Sintra Mountains began in the Middle Ages as a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Pena but was only completed under King Ferdinand in 1854. The castle, 15 miles (24.5km) from central Lisbon, overlooks the North Atlantic Ocean. The whimsical multi-colored palace was purchased by the Portuguese State in 1889 and after the 1910 Republican Revolution the estate was declared a national monument. Under the Portuguese State it became a museum. The palace and landscape overlooking the North Atlantic Ocean was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995
