The UK Government’s Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill (Police Bill) is an attempt to legislate to limit the right to protest. It is an assault on our right to assembly and protest, aiming to make it as ineffective as possible. The right to protest is at the heart of a democratic society. The 8 hour working day, votes for women, the right to equal pay and much more has been won through protest. The Police Bill is a threat to all those campaign groups, trade unions and others seeking to exercise their democratic right to legitimate protest. It also undermines the human right of 'peaceful assembly and association' as contained in Article 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 11 of the UK Human Rights Act.
