Norwich Cathedral was begun in 1096 by Bishop Herbert de Losinga and was built as part of a Benedictine monastery. By the mid 1100's the building was virtually complete but it wasn't consecrated until 1278. The spire from the perpendicular period is the second tallest in England and was added after the original wooden one caught fire in 1463. The cathedral is built of flint rubble and mortar faced with limestone ashlar.
