A research scientist setting up tests of a drug in development by automatic perfusion of a sample of human colon tissue. The drug, in varying forms and dilutions, etc is pumped over the tissue held in the glass vessels, which is then examined in detail to ascertain optimum dosage and conditions of use. The technique is used in preference to the usual pre-clinical testing of drugs on animals as it is believed that the animals are poor predictors of compounds intended for human use and that tests on human tissue should provide more accurate, efficient and ethically justifiable results as this method of data collection reduces the number of live animal tests.
