Chesil Beach extends some 18 k, all the way from Portland to West Bay. Attributed to the phenomenon of 'longshore drift', the pebbles are graded in size along its length. Being no more than shingle at West Bay, the pebbles gradually increase in size until they reach the proportions of a baked potato in Chesil Cove, on the Isle of Portland. They say that if you dropped a fisherman anywhere along its length, at night, he would know where he was . . . just by feeling the size of the pebbles
