Praia da Ribeira beach, Cascais, Portugal. The small sand beach in the center of Cascais was traditionally the fishermen’s beach where fishing boats were moored, catches unloaded and hauled onto the sand to ride out storms or to make repairs. Now the beach near the promenade with restaurants, bars and hotels is crowded with tourists. Cascais, a town on the Portuguese coast of more than 200, 000 is 15 miles (24km) west of the capital, Lisbon, has become one of the wealthiest in Portugal with the most expensive real estate in the country. Cascais’s reputation as a top seaside resort began in the 1870s when King Luis I and the Portuguese royal family along with nobility spent their summers there. Other Royalty that has lived in Cascais have been King Edward VII of the United Kingdom, King Juan Carlos I of Spain, King Umberto II of Italy and exiled Cuban President Fulgencio Batista. It is also claimed that the Cascais Casino Estoril was the inspiration for Ian Fleming’s James Bond novel, Casino Royal.
