"The Queen of Mercia" Queen of Mercia This sculpture sits by the side of the Manchester Ship Canal at Runcorn. It depicts Aethelfleda, the Mercian princess, as the prow head of a vessel. She is looking in the direction of where the fortification, which she erected at Runcorn c. 914 A.D. to defend Mercia from Vikings, would have been, i.e. in the direction of the railway bridge. Designed and made by sculptor Phil Bewes who now works with his partner Diane Gorvin. They did other work in the Runcorn area in the 1980's, especially at Norton Priory Museum and Gardens. They are now based in the Forest of Dean area. They have a lovely website at www.bewsgorvin.co.uk
