Ripe, black-purplish Hass avocados are seen offered for sale in the street of Medellín, Antioquia department, Colombia, 28 November 2019. Over the past decade, the Colombian avocado industry has experienced massive growth, both as a result of general economic development in Colombia, and the increased global demand for so-called superfood products. The geographical and climate conditions in Antioquia (high altitude, no seasonal extremes, high precipitation rate) allow two harvest windows of the Hass avocado variety across the year. Although the majority of the Colombian avocado exports are destined towards Europe now, Colombia aspires to become one of the major avocado suppliers to the U.S. market in the near future.
