Fray Luis de Leon was a famous Spanish lyric poet, Augustinian friar, theologian and academic, who was active during the Spanish 16th Century Golden Age. Both his parents were from Jewish Converso - forced conversion - roots. Persecuted, cleared, slandered, subject to the inquisition, he had an eventful career, but was always strongly associated with Salamanca's historic university.
