1952 - The Alamo: Shrine of Texas Liberty. Most famous of the missions. Present building is the old chapel of Mission San Antonio de Valero, founded in 1718 by the Franciscan padres. In 1836, during the war of Texas independence, the Alamo was the scene of one of the most heroic events in the history of our nations. All of the defending Texas soldiers were killed here while besieged by troops under the Mexican general Santa Anna. The now reknown battle cry ''Remember the Alamo'' later carried the Texans to victory. © Keystone Pictures USA/ZUMAPRESS.com/Alamy Live News
