29/09/1399 - ON THIS DAY IN 1399 - King Richard II of England is forced to abdicate in favour of Henry Bolingbroke (Henry IV) 14/02/1400: On this day in 1400, the abdicated King Richard II is murdered in Pontefract Castle KING RICHARD II: A portrait of Richard of Bordeaux (1367-1400) as King of England (1377-1400). His reign was troubled by popular discontent (notably the Peasants' Revolt) and baronial opposition. He was forced to abdicate in favour of Henry Bolingbroke (later Henry IV) and died at Pontefract castle in mysterious circumstances.
