More information:

The Crystal Palace, originally sited in Hyde Park, was designed by Sir Joseph Paxton to house the Great Exhibition of 1851. It was enlarged and moved to Upper Norwood in 1854 where it made the area fashionable and was a focus for various events. It was still in use as an exhibition centre when it was destroyed by fire in 1936. This sphinx is at the base of a staircase at one end of the Italian Terraces.
