Detail of alabaster effigy (c 1330) of King Edward II who was murdered in 1327 and became a popular saint. His son, Edward III, turned the choir of the Norman Benedictine abbey church into a royal mausoleum, in the Perpendicular Gothic style, containing a many-pinnacled shrine to his father.
