Bone marrow transplantation is required when stem cell production is defective (leukemia, aplasia, hypoplasia). The patients bone marrow is replaced by bone marrow harvested from a compatible healthy donor. Bone marrow is harvested under general anesthesia by puncture of the iliac bone or the sternum. The bone marrow is filtered and frozen. After complete destruction of all the patients stem cells, the healthy bone marrow stem cells are transplanted by transfusion and colonize the recipients bone marrow. This is called an allograft. When the patients own stem cells are harvested and reinjected after treatment of the underlying disease, the bone marrow transplantation is called an autograft (in this case there is no risk of graft rejection).
