Examples of debris removed from the sewer on display at the NYC Dept. of Environmental Protection demonstration of their new Vactor Trucks in Brooklyn in New York on Wednesday, June 16, 2010. The $450, 000 trucks are part of a program to systematically clean the large interceptor sewer lines. Debris that normally builds up, and the products of illegal dumping, prevent the lines from handling the maximum amount of sewage during heavy rainfalls and overflow conditions. The two trucks in service can suck up via their vacuums up to 3 tons of sediment and debris a day providing an estimated 25 percent increase in capacity in some lines. (© Richard B. Levine)
