Prior to this somewhat lighthearted moment Patton's troops had captured Mainz, Germany on March 20th. US and British forces cross the Rhine at Oppenheim on March 22nd-23rd. Montgomery's troops cross the Rhine at Wesel on March 24th. By this time it is clear that Germany is under attack from all sides.
