Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden (1594-1632), the "Lion of the North, " the champion of German Protestantism, was slain in battle, some say by the treachery of a spy among his own forces. In the confusion of the contests, he was suddenly surrounded by a group of the enemies' cavalry, who slew him without knowing who he was. His boy page, who attempted to preserve him, perished by his side.
