Charles Bridge is a stone Gothic bridge that connects the Old Town "Stare Mesto" and the Lesser Quarter "Malá Strana" across the Vltava river. Its construction was commissioned by the Czech king Charles IV and work started in 1357. Thirty Baroque statues line either side of Charles Bridge, by far the most popular being that of Czech martyr John of Nepomuk, however many of them are now copies.
