Interior box containing cast iron medal by Karl Goetz of sinking of the Cunard liner Lusitania by a German U Boat U-20 submarine on 7th May 1915 - though the medal gives the date as the 5th. The month on this medal is spelled in the English "May", not the German "Mai" as on an original. Photographed against a pure white background. RMS Lusitania was a British luxury ocean liner owned by Cunard. On its way from New York to Liverpool, it was torpedoed by a German U-boat on 7th May 1915 eleven miles (19 km) off the Old Head of Kinsale, Ireland, and sank in just eighteen minutes, killing 1, 198 of the 1, 959 people aboard. The sinking turned public opinion in many countries against Germany, and was probably a major factor in the decision of the United States to join World War I.
