NIGHT SHINING WHITE, by Han Gan, 743-756, Chinese, Tang dynasty, painting, ink on paper. The animated horse of 8th century Emperor Xuanzong is portrayed with flaring nostrils and raised hoofs. This is the most famous work by Han Gan, the leading horse painter of his time. The seals and inscriptions added by later owners are a custom of Chinese connoisseurship (BSLOC 2017 16 6)
