Oud on display. From Damascus, Syria. Showing 5 pairs of strings (the ÔdoublesÕ sounding sympathetically). Common across the Middle East, the precursor of the western lute. The name oud (or ud) derives from the Arabic for 'wood', and this refers to the strips of wood used to make its rounded body. Intricate inlay, carving and mother of pearl.
