Portrait photo of African-American political leader, educator, orator and author Booker T Washington (1856 - 1915). Washington, born a slave, was a leading figure in US race relations in the late 19th and early 20th century and the first teacher and principal of the Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama, a school for African-Americans. He wrote a best-selling autobiography entitled Up From Slavery (1901) as well as a string of other books and advised Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Taft on race relations.
