Proteus mirabilis bacterium, computer illustration. This is an enterobacterium which is present normally in the human intestine, although it has potential pathogenic qualities. Infections of the urinary tract are the most common diseases caused by P. mirabilis. Often such infections occur in hospitals as a secondary infection in debilitated patients. This gram-negative bacillus has flagella (hair-like structures) on its surface. The movement of the flagella gives the bacterium its mobility, enabling Proteus strains to spread rapidly.
