The Grannies were protesting Chase Banks' involvement with British Petroleum outside of a Chase Bank branch on Middlefield Road in Palo Alto, California on June 26th 2010 as part of the Hands Across The Sand. Hands Across The Sand is an annual demonstration against offshore oil drilling and dependence on fossil fuels that started in Florida on June 26th of 2009. According to Hands Across The Sand organizers demonstrations took place in all 50 U.S. states and more than 20 countries in 2010. The Raging Grannies were founded in Victoria, British Columbia in 1987 by a group of peace activists who wanted to increase their effectiveness and impact and now has chapters worldwide.
