Statue of Captain Robert Falcon Scott R.N C.V.O., polar explorer. in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. English Scott was an officer of the Royal Navy who led two expeditions to the Antarctic in 1901–04 and 1910–12. Scott led a group of five which reached the South Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that Ronald Amundsen's Norwegian expedition had reached the pole ahead of them. Scott and his party failed to reach safety on the return journey and died of cold and exhaustion some 150 miles from their base camp.
